Introducing Composite Score Above Replacement and Composite Score Above Bench

For the end of the season, I have decided to unveil two new statistics: Composite Score Above Replacement and Composite Score Above Bench.  Composite Score Above Replacement shows how well a players plays compared to players who obtain little playing time (the eleventh and twelfth players on a team).  Composite Score Above Becnch shows how well a players plays above the weakest “starter”.  To find Replacement and Bench levels, I separated the 330 players who had played 500 minutes or more from the 147 who had not.  I then rounded the score of the 150th best player to the nearest hundredth to find the Bench Level and did the same for the 300th best player to find the Replacement Level.  This may not be the most scientific way, but it works.  The Bench Level is .100, which is the approximately the same as the league average, while Replacement Level is .010, just above the zero level.  The players’ team listing includes all those that he played for during the season, while his position is as listed on thenbageek.com, which is taken from a formula created by Andres Alvarez.  I have eliminated any adjustments for PERrate, so it is simply (PER^2)/225.  The list is sorted by Wins Above Replacement Level as determined by Composite Score.  (Revision: Jermaine O’Neal and Trey Thompkins’s stat lines have errors in the WS48 column.  This did skew the data.  FinalData holds the corrections.)

I Digress- My NFL Mock Draft

I was trying really hard to not get involved in the NFL Draft.  It almost worked.  In the end, it didn’t quite happen.  Finally, I surrendered and did a mock draft using ESPN.com’s NFL Draft Machine.  I used Peter King’s mock draft in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated and about.com’s NFL Draft Needs page (after pick ten) as guides.  It probably has no basis in fact (my mock drafts never do), but here goes nothing.

  1. Indianapolis QB Andrew Luck Stanford
  2. Washington (from St. Louis) QB Robert Griffin III Baylor
  3.  Cleveland (from Minnesota) RB Trent Richardson Alabama
  4. Tampa Bay T Matt Kalil USC
  5. Minnesota (from Cleveland) CB Morris Claiborne LSU
  6. St. Louis (from Washington) WR Justin Blackmon Oklahoma St.
  7. Jacksonville DT Fletcher Cox Mississippi St.
  8. Miami QB Ryan Tannehill Texas A&M
  9. Carolina DT Michael Brockers LSU
  10. Buffalo T Riley Reiff Iowa
  11. Kansas City LB Luke Kuechly Boston College
  12. Seattle S Mark Barron Alabama
  13. Arizona G David DeCastro Stanford
  14. Dallas DE Melvin Ingram South Carolina
  15. Philadelphia CB Stephon Gilmore South Carolina
  16. New York Jets DE Quinton Coples North Carolina
  17. Cincinnati (from Oakland) DE Courtney Upshaw Alabama
  18. San Diego DE Chandler Jones Syracuse
  19. Chicago DT Dontari Poe Memphis
  20. Tennessee LB Shea McClellin Boise St.
  21. Cincinnati WR Michael Floyd Notre Dame
  22. Cleveland (from Atlanta) T Jonathan Martin Stanford
  23. Detroit CB Dre Kirkpatrick Alabama
  24. Pittsburgh LB Dont’a Hightower Alabama
  25. Denver DE Whitney Mercilus Illinois
  26. Houston DT Jerel Worthy Michigan St.
  27. New England (from New Orleans) G Kevin Zeitler Wisconsin
  28. Green Bay RB Doug Martin Boise St.
  29. Baltimore C Peter Konz Wisconsin
  30. San Francisco DT Devon Still Penn St.
  31. New England DE Nick Perry USC
  32. New York Giants T Cordy Glenn Georgia

I probably have Floyd, Poe, Jones, and Gilmore too low, with McClellin, Martin, Zeitler, and Cox too high.  In the draft I submitted to ESPN, I had Claiborne and Kalil switched, but I did it this way when I realized that would not happen on any planet.  Enjoy, and come back soon!

Note. (5/17) This post was initially published approximately half an hour after the draft started.  However, I was unaware of any picks at the time either that this post or my ESPN Mock Draft were submitted.

Why I’m Not Covering the NFL Draft

This year, I have been trying not to become involved with the NFL Draft.  There are a couple of reasons why I have been trying to do this.

For one, I have been trying to disassociate myself from football in all forms because of its extreme violence.  The rampant concussions, retiree suicides, hip replacements, and other maladies directly related to former players’ careers are enough to turn me off to football.  I have not always been successful, and in all probability I will watch this year’s Super Bowl, but it has been a nice deterrent to wasting my Sundays.  Of course, I never really did that in the first place….

The other, bigger reason that I am trying to not become involved is the unpredictability of each individual selection.  Whenever draft gurus like Mel Kiper and Todd McShay talk about prospects, they mention watching the guy’s game tape, or how good a quarterback’s arm is, how good at a wide receiver is at route running, or his Combine performance.  Honestly, they sound like the old baseball men in Moneyball!  Remember “The Good Face”?  Although it’s not quite that ridiculous, it seems pretty close if you step away and try to look from an unbiased point of view.  Believe me, it’s hard; I’ve gotten suckered in myself a couple of times!  No hint of quantitative statistical analysis is to be find in their discussions.

Besides, it doesn’t even work!  In 2001, seventeen future Pro Bowlers were drafted in the first round, including Michael Vick and LaDanian Tomlinson.  After that, twenty Pro Bowlers remained on the board, including three undrafted rookies (Rob Bironas, Antonio Pierce, and Shayne Graham)!  Mind you, two of the undrafteds were kickers, but Drew Brees, Kris Jenkins, Matt Light, Steve Smith, and T.J. Housmanzadeh were still there too.  In 2006, twenty-one of thirty-six future Pro Bowlers were not first-rounders.  Five of them went undrafted, including the one and only Miles Austin from Monmouth.  Meanwhile, Matt Leinart and John McCargo were first-rounders!  See what I mean when I say that NFL draft scouting has unpredictable results?

That’s why I am trying to disenfranchise myself from the NFL Draft.  The emphasis should be placed on “try” though; as we speak, I have the latest issue of Sports Illustrated opened to Peter King’s mock draft.  However, I invite you all to join me in not watching this spectacle Thursday through Saturday.  It may not be a waste of time for the NFL and ESPN, but I’m sure the Radio City Music Hall could have found a nice Broadway show to present on a Thursday night instead of the first round.

Go Kings!

I feel psyched!  For the first time in eleven years, the Los Angeles Kings hockey teams has won a play-off series.  For the third time in four years, the President’s Cup winner has fallen in the first round to an eight seed after the Vancouver Canucks were defeated by my beloved Kings in five games.  (The President’s Cup is awarded to the team that accumulates the most points during the season.  Teams are rewarded two points for a win and one for an overtime or shootout loss.)  For the first time all season, I got around to watching my favorite team play hockey, and it was amazing.

We came back from a 1-0 deficit when Brad Richardson scored a garbage goal early in the third period, avenging a wonderful piece of teamwork created by the Sedin twins late in the first.  Throughtout the game, my nerves were tense as both teams traded short periods of dominance.  Regulation provided no winner, and I was worried.  I had a sinking feeling that if we lost that game, we drop the next two to the Canucks and blow our first 3-0 series lead in years.  Needless to say, we did not fail.  Approximately five minutes into the overtime, after both teams had let loose a barrage of shots on the opposing, seemingly indomitable goaltenders, Jarret Stoll let loose a beautiful slap shot on the break over Vancouver goalie Cory Schneider’s shoulder.  When you looked at it, you could tell that Kings fans were somewhat lucky.  For one, Schneider had turned in response to the shot, causing him to dip his shoulder.  If he had not turned, the puck could possibly have slammed into him in that general area, and who knows what would have happened then?  Furthermore, the pick hit the crossbar on the inside, directing it into the net.  Had that puck been much higher, there would have been no goal.

But when that goal scored, I was ecstatic.  I ran around and pumped my fist.  I then proceeded to vault over my sister.  Thank goodness I jumped with my legs open; otherwise, my hundred-forty pound body would have slammed straight into her face.  Not a pretty picture.  However, for that period, luck was with me; my team had won, and I did not mutilate my sister in a moment of stupidity.  Hurrah!  May we beat the Preds in the next round, too.

P.S. The Ottawa Senators are one game away from toppling the No. 1 seed in the east, the New York Rangers.  It would be amazing if both teams were knocked out in the first round.  Of course, that’s the magic of the Stanley Cup Play-offs for you!

Background on Phillip Humber

I have heard that Phillip Humber became the third White Sox pitcher to ever throw perfect game in a nine-strikeout outing against the Mariners.  This is amazing, and we should all congratulate Humber on his historic performance.  Even posting nine strikeouts in a game is really good.  Something that I find really interesting about this is the fact that Humbe had never before thrown a complete game, let alone a no-hitter.  The twenty-nine year-old has made major league appearances every year since 2006 with the Mets, Twins, Royals, and White Sox, but last year was his first extended stay in the show.  In the previous years, he had thrown a grand total of 51 1/3 innings.  The hurler, who hails from the same city in Texas as soccer star Clint Dempsey, went 9-9 last year with a 1.18 WHIP and a 3.75 ERA.  His Win Probability Added was equal to 1.4 wins, while he posted a WAR of 3.3.  This casts him as a solid but not spectacular starter.  He wears the number 41, but he has worn three others in the big leagues.  He was drafted third overall by the Mets in 2004 out of Rice University in Houston.   In last year’s version of Out of the Park, I had used him on my largely unsuccessful Mariners squad.  (Go figure.)  I wrote this article to help us all get a glimpse into the career of perfect game hurler Phillip Humber.

A Revision of PERrate

Today at lunch, I briefly thought about how to refine my rescaling of PER, which I call PERrate.  I had noticed when doing my assessment of the Spurs yesterday that the PERrate scores tended to be clustered around the league average.  This led to the understanding that I needed to create an exponential function that would convert PER onto the same scale as Wins Produced, Win Shares, and (by extension) Composite Score.  My first attempt was a straight exponential function, where I divided PER squared by 15 squared, or 225.  However, when I tested this using Wilt Chamberlain’s 31.84 PER season in 1963, I got the utterly ridiculous answer of .446.  After that, I player around with dividing the actual PER level by a small number before dividing by 225.  Even though I knew this would skew the league average downward, I find it unreasonable to believe that anyone has thought that any player is 4.5 times better than the league average, save maybe George Mikan.  I started with 1.15, then 1.20, and I finished at 1.25.  I decided to use 1.15 as my modifier.  The final formula is: PERrate=(PER^2/1.15)/225.  Chamberlain’s record-setting season has a score of .385, while the league average of 15 is .087.  This is not meant to fix PER or make it more palatable; on the contrary, I believe it should be used to determine how highly is rated compared to how highly he should be rated.  Of course, this is tentative, and I might try to come up with something better.  Until then, I think this is a good way to measure both perception and perception relative to ability.

P.S.  In the end, this would change the judgments I made about the Spurs yesterday if I wished to redo them.  I will not at this time, in part because it would eliminate some of the more interesting phenomena, but I will use it in any future evaluations.  It would strengthen my “Trade Tony Parker” argument considerably, though….

Revisions: (April 20, 2012) Originally, I had my modifier set to 1.2.  However, after publishing this post, I was looking on the Wages of Wins Journal and seeing some old Wins Produced numbers which I only can access when reading certain articles.  The fact that a .400 WP48 was not in the realm of fantasy led to adjusting my modifier downward.  In the future, I may adjust the modifier depending on league size, but I am not sure if I will do this in the foreseeable future.

My Assessment of the San Antonio Spurs

Lately, I have been considering become a Spurs front office intern when the time comes that I am ready to apply for such internships.  I would choose the Lakers, being the better of the local teams, except for the fact that I’m not sure if Jim Buss would be open to analytical ideas.  I’m afraid that he will be (when he officially owns the team) a very hands-on owner like Mark Cuban or George Steinbrenner.  However, the Spurs are a team that my dad has admired ever since the beginning of their dynasty for their class, and that I have admired for their ability to remain relevant.  The Spurs are a very interesting in that the majority of the team is either underrated to some degree, or have been a superstar for a long time (that is Duncan, Parker, and Ginobli).  In the case of Ginobli, it’s been both.  I have also noticed that it’s been a couple days since my last post, so the combination of these three factors leads to me wanting to evaluate the Spurs.  (Please note that over the course of this post I will be using Wins Produced that has not been adjusted for defense, as I do not have the resources to do the adjustments and Arturo Galletti does not consistently update this statistic.)

To make decisions on how overrated/underrated each player was, I converted PER to the same scale as Composite Score using the formula PERrate=(PER/15)*.099.  Admittedly, this still fails to completely show PER on the same scale as Composite Score since the best season of all time would only record a PERrate of .210, and that using an exponential function would be better, but I think that this is sufficient for my purposes.  I determined the exact proportions by subtracting PERrate from Composite Score.  Right off the bat, I noticed something peculiar: San Antonio has fourteen active players, seven of which are underrated, seven of which are overrated.  Okay, fair enough.  However, San Antonio’s seven best players according to Composite Score are overrated, while its seven weakest players are underrated.  The same (concerning ability) is true for both of the statistics used to calculate Composite Score-Win Shares and Wins Produced, both prorated over 48 minutes.  Admittedly, sometimes the difference is rather close (Tim Duncan is only overrated by .003 wins per 48), but it still exists.  I’m not going to try to explain this, but I think it’s very interesting.  San Antonio’s players, listed by Composite Score, can be found at spursassessment.  (I wish I knew how to stick a table in the middle of my post without learning HTML, but I don’t, so we’re stuck with the Excel links.  Sorry.)

At this point, it is no longer possible to trade players with expiring contracts, eliminating Duncan, Green, Mills, Anderson, and Diaw from any discussion.  However, those by no means make up the entire roster.  However, their only overrated players of value are Stephen Jackson and (maybe) James Anderson.  I am of the belief that, until the analytics movement gains more steam, all times who do use advanced while acquiring more than their net worth.  Unfortunately for the Spurs, the only possibilities of this are Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal.  Jackson has an expiring contract and a reputation, making him a great “deadweight” player.  Unfortunately, Neal is not greatly overrated, and he makes something the minimum salary.  However, Neal is peaking, and people forget how old he is because he hasn’t been in the league very long.  Cory Joseph, although seemingly highly overrated, has a bloated PERrate because you can get a PER of 3.5 for breathing according to some blogpost I read the other day (I think it was Bill Simmons or something).  Joseph’s PER is 7.6.

However, even though he technically isn’t overrated according to PERrate, I think Tony Parker is a prime trade candidate, provided that they acquire a younger and/or secretly better point in the immediate aftermath.  Here’s my reasoning:

For one, Tony Parker will turn thirty next year.  This is the time when players start to “fall off the cliff”.  Any year now, Parker may lose spontaneously lose half of his life.  Second of all, he already (sort of, kind of) fell off the cliff; two years ago, he posted a Composite Score of .075.  Although he has returned to his previous form over the past two years, it might be a warning sign for future decline.  (I haven’t studied falling off the cliff personally or read anything players who resurrect their careers, but I would I imagine it would lead to a future decline.)  Third of all, he probably is overrated, considering that PERrate is clustered too closely to the center.  Of course, barring any other transactions, the Spurs’ best option at point guard next year would be (drumroll, please) Gary Neal!  However, I’m sure the Spurs could swing something; they are the Spurs, after all.

Then there is the question of Tim Duncan.  Duncan has declined considerably, according to both conventional wisdom and anayltical measurements.  He is old, as far as basketball players are concerned.  However, it is still clear that he remains a serviceable center.  On the other hand, Tiago Splitter is a considerably younger center of slightly higher value.  Then, you also have the ever-so-slightly overrated DeJuan Blair.  And there’s the loyalty factor.  In the end, I think that the Spurs should resign Duncan, albeit at a greatly reduced rate.  He would then start the season as the starting center, while Blair acts as the team’s seventh or eighth man and Splitter start at the 4.  If Duncan’s skill continues to slip, Blair would go to the 4, Splitter to the 5, and Duncan to the bench.  Ultimately, I believe that he wants to finish his career in San Antonio, and that somehow the two sides would work something out.

Here’s my verdict:  The Spurs are a very solid, very deep, and somewhat underrated team.  They should shop Stephen Jackson, Cory Joseph, and Gary Neal for young value.  (It’s unlikely they’ll get much for Joseph.)  They should also try to trade Tony Parker, ensuring that they pick up a point guard, an albatross contract (or two), and lots of draft picks along the way.  They should prepare for the possibility that some of their older players will fall off the cliff, and they should resign Danny Green and Patty Mills to the cheapest contracts possible.  (I’ve always been a fan of Mills since he whitewashed Oregon in one of his first collegiate games.  Then again, I’ll become a fan of almost any player who has a good run.  Regardless, a back-up point guard does not necessarily have to be a world beater.)  Keep doing what you’re doing, San Antone!

P.S. This is my fortieth post.  I have deleted a couple along the way, but of them are still available.  Check out my archives!

P.P.S. If you have anything to saw about this post, please comment!  I want constructive criticism (although if you bash me, I will delete your bashings).
